About Us

The Holy Spirit Church, Golf Course Estate, G.R.A. Enugu was solemnly dedicated on 12th January 2020.

The Holy Spirit Parish like a mustard seed has grown today into a big tree. The parish started with an inaugural mass on the 24th of August, 2008 at the house of Hon. Sir Gab & Lolo Uche Nomeh (Enyikwonwa) with few parishioners and many personal friends of the pioneer parish priest. It is worthy to note that the parish was never a mass centre or an outstation but the pastoral ingenuity of our Emeritus Bishop, Most Rev. A O. Gbuji, who created the parish.

We had many initial pastoral challenges ranging from where to take off, the temporal church building, few parishioners, procurement of land for the permanent site of the parish, etc. In light of these, Chief Ikeje Asogwa who was the then Managing Director of Enugu State Housing Development Corporation gave us the land at our present-day permanent site at a discount.

The journey to the permanent site was not an easy one. The pioneer parishioners encountered unimaginable challenges raging from the topography of the parish land, the soil texture, the access to the site, construction of a bridge (culvert), getting electricity in the site, building of a parish rectory, church, etc. All these the parishioners surmounted with the pastoral leadership and wisdom of the pioneer parish priest – Rev Fr Polycarp Okafor. Thus, the parish rectory was completed in a record time and was blessed by His Lordship, Most Rev. C.V.C. Onaga on 13th January 2013. This led to the movement from the temporal site to the permanent site. After this, the building of our church commenced which the pioneer parish priest started and built to roofing level before he left for further studies.

The completion of the Holy Spirit Church would not have been feasible without the instrumentality and expertise of the following people: Engr. R.K. Anozie, Engr. Oliver Uzoma, Arch. Emeka Mba and other pioneer and subsequent members of the Building and Works Committee, pioneer and subsequent Parish Council members & their leaders, the leaders of the C.M.O., C.W.O., C.Y.O.N., as well as the leaders of the various zones and the entire parishioners not forgetting friends of the parish. The magnanimous support and sacrifices of all the past and present parishioners and the friends of the parish can never be forgotten in the history of our parish building.

His Lordship, Most Rev. Anthony Gbuji, in his wisdom consulted with the Diocesan Curia and created the Holy Spirit Parish, Golf Course Estate, GRA Enugu out of Christ the King Parish, GRA, Enugu

After the birth of this new parish by the Christ the King Parish, Rev. Fr. Polycarp Chukwumaijem Okafor was appointed the pioneer parish priest. Rev. Fr. Camillus Ejike Mbaka of Christ the King Parish took up the challenge and shouldered the provision of some basic needs of the parish for its initial take-off. He did his utmost best to ensure that the newborn parish lacked nothing essential and basic.

Rev. Fr. P.C. Okafor drove into action and on 24th august 2008, solemnly celebrated the inaugural mass by 8.30 am. Sunday masses, confessions, visiting the sick and subsequently, organs of the parish were created.

It is very important to note that at this initial stage the parish hadn’t up to (25) twenty-five families in attendance.

On Sunday 14th September 2008, the parish priest created five zones which include St. Mary’s Zone (Zone 1) St. Gabriel’s Zone (Zone 2), Our Lady of Perpetual Help Zone (Zone3), Divine Mercy Zone (Zone 4), and All Saints Zone (International Zone). In the same vein on 21st September 2008, he inaugurated the Finance Council with late Chief Gabriel Okafor (KSM) as the Vice-Chairman, Mrs. Chinwe M. Attamah as Secretary, Engr. V.C. Uzowulu, Mr. Gil Ugwu, Mrs. Vin Nwodo, and Miss Ebere as members and Mrs. C. Oliobi as the Publicity Secretary.

Furthermore, on Sunday 25th September 2008, other organs were created. The Parish Pastoral Council was created with Engr. R.K. Anozie (KSM) as the pioneer vice-chairman and Hon. Uche Nome (KSJI) as the pioneer secretary; the Catholic Men Organization was created with Barr. Emmanuel Ogechukwu Attamah as the pioneer chairman; the Catholic Women Organization was created with Mrs. V.C. Uzowulu as the pioneer chairman and the Catholic Youths Organization was created with Mr. Emezie Emejuru as the pioneer president.

It is worthy of note that since the birth of this parish, the parishioners, their friends, and the friends of the parish have been very much committed and dedicated to the affairs, growth, and development of the parish. To buttress this and not being sentimental in less than four years of her creation, the parish of less than thirty (30) families bought the present site with millions of naira with the help of the parish mayor, Chief Ikeje Israel Asogwa.

In January 2016, the mantle of leadership changed. The pioneer parish priest, Very Rev. Fr. Polycarp Chukwumajiem Okafor was transferred to St. Mary’s Ngwo in preparation for his travel to Germany for further studies. He was replaced by Very Rev. Fr. Victor Ogbogu Ubaka who has since his coming maintained the steady stream of progress in the parish. He did not in any way allow the relay baton handed over to him to drop. In line with the vision of the then bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Anthony Okonkwo Gbuji, the then parish priest, Very Rev. Fr. P.C Okafor saw to the growth and development of the baby parish in 2010 carved out an outstation to serve the pastoral needs of the people living in RCC Estate and beyond.

The outstation, St. John the Beloved Apostle, was inaugurated with a mass on 10th October 2010 by Rev. Fr. P.C. Okafor with about 35 people in attendance. It has since grown in size and infrastructural development and formally became a parish as declared by His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. C.V.C. Onaga with a solemn mass by very Rev. Fr. Victor Ogbogu Ubaka on Sunday 29th January 2017.
